HMLTD – Blitzkrieg
HMLTD are back with “Blitzkrieg”, out now on Lucky Number and their first new music since 2023’s The Worm. The London group frame it as a hard reset, a return to the confrontational values of their early manifesto, and describe it in their words as a reinstatement of “radical experimentation, violent confrontation, and music as revolt”. After the avant-chamber-rock turn of The Worm, this pivots hard back toward electronics: a high-intensity, techno-leaning jerk of a track that sounds built for a club about to boil over.
The band have given the new direction a name, GTHERDMMERUNG, or ÜberGöth. They describe it as a kind of gothic insurrection, dragging up vampires, witches, plague pits, and ruined castles as a way of mapping present-day anxieties around AI, hyperreality, and what they call techno-capitalist acceleration. It’s provocative by design, and the lyrics pile on deliberately jarring, blasphemous and violent imagery, love and death and religion all short-circuiting into each other. Whether that lands as bracing or exhausting will come down to your tolerance for HMLTD’s particular brand of maximalism, but the intent is unmistakable.
Musically it does the thing HMLTD have always done best: build to an overwhelming peak and then pull the floor out. “Blitzkrieg” collapses in its final stretch, the abrasive rave dissolving into a quieter, melancholic piano coda, the wrong-footing move that’s defined their work since the start. It was mixed by Nicos Kennedy (Machine Girl, Femtanyl), and it arrives with a new lineup: Theo Spark and Andrei Martynchyk join Henry Spychalski and Duc Peterman.
